HTML paragraph attributes

Some aspects of paragraph attributes such as alignment and indentation can be assigned to HTML text.

This chapter explains how to apply HTML paragraph attributes to text using the Inspector palette. In some cases you may want to use the Style dialog box. You can also use keyboard shortcuts.

HTML paragraphs with GIF characters

A useful feature of Freeway is the ability to define runs of text within an HTML text box as GIF text - this means that you can apply the complete range of typographic attributes to this text, and it will be exported as a GIF graphic when the site is published to HTML. The GIF is essentially an "inline" graphic, and will flow naturally with the text.

To define a run of text within an HTML text box as GIF, follow these steps:

1. Highlight the text you wish to be exported as a GIF

2. Choose GIF from the Character popup menu in the Text panel of the Inspector palette.

3. Apply the attributes you wish to this text.

Alignment

HTML paragraphs can display three alignments: left, right and centered.

To change the alignment of paragraphs:

1. Select the text.

2. Display the Text panel of the Inspector palette or the Style dialog box.

3. Click on one of the alignment buttons.

You can also use the Style menu and keyboard shortcuts to apply alignment.

List

Freeway allows you to assign HTML attributes which determine the way lists are viewed by the browser. The options are None, Ordered, Unordered, Glossary, Compact Glossary, Menu and Directory. Text assigned these list formats will be shown depending on the way the browser interprets these formats.

To assign a list format to text:

1. Select the text.

2. Display the Text panel of the Inspector palette.

3. Choose the format you want from the List popup menu.

The most useful types to use are Ordered, for a sequentially numbered list, and Unordered, for a bulleted list.

For internal reasons, Freeway cannot apply a combination of Alignment and List attributes to the same run of text - the List text will display as Left aligned regardless.

Indent

You can assign up to 5 indent levels to your paragraphs. The size of the indent seen by the reader is determined by the browser.

To assign an indent to a paragraph:

1. Select the text

2. Display the Text panel of the Inspector palette or the Style dialog box.

3. Choose the indent level from the Indent popup menu.

HTML paragraph rules

You can apply a rule after a paragraph using the Text menu. Click after the paragraph and then choose Text/Rule. A standard three dimensional rule is added to the paragraph. When you select the rule by clicking on it, a Rules panel tab appears at the top of the Inspector palette. Click on the Rules tab to display the controls for the rule. You can change the alignment by clicking on one of the three Alignment buttons, the width by entering a value in the Size text box and the inset by entering a value in the Inset text box. You can also change its appearance from three-dimensional to a solid colored rule by clicking the Solid Rule check box.
